Speech Arts Syllabus

All selections are to be performed from memory. Competitors must present to the Adjudicator the published book or printed source with edited selections clearly marked, or, if selection is from a free website, bring a printed text citing the author and website source.

Poetry Classes - No costumes or props are to be used for Poetry Classes.

Monologue - Costumes are accepted, but not necessary. The use of one handheld prop is permitted.

Poetry - Lyric or Narrative - One selection - time limit: 3mins

  • A lyric poem emphasizes melodic and pictorial imagery and is an expression of internal thought.
  • A narrative poem tells a story and is directed to the audience.

Monologue

Monologue - one selection - time limit: 5 mins

  • A dramatic or comedic speech by one character in a scene and/or play. Monologue can be either classical or contemporary.
